Many people think that being a philanthropist requires millions of dollars. This notion probably comes from the fact that there have been noted philanthropists throughout history who have used their resources to build hospitals, fund libraries and commission art projects.
Just because a person doesn’t have much money doesn’t mean that a person can’t be a philanthropist. There are some good ways to give to others and help people that don’t require any money at all.
People who don’t have a lot of money to give to help others may have time that they can give. There are a number of great organizations that need help helping others. Hospices are one place where volunteers are desperately needed. Families of those reaching the end of life need people to talk to, and those who are sick often benefit from just having someone near who will listen.
There are many other ways to volunteer one’s time. Churches and community groups could not operate without the work of an army of volunteers who make these organizations run effectively.
If someone isn’t a people person, there are a number of animal-related charities that need assistance. Animal shelters need people to come and take the dogs out for a walk each day so that the dogs get enough exercise. Cats also need people to take them out of their cages and play with them so that they don’t feel so nervous in a strange environment.
Donate What Is No Longer Needed
Most people have a lot of things around their homes that they don’t have any use for. One way to be a philanthropist without money is to donate used items that you have to organizations or individuals that can really use them.
If the children are grown, you may have some old toys that are still in good shape around the house. These can be donated to childcare centers for the children’s use. Organizations like Goodwill and the Salvation Army are always in need of clothing donations.
Simple Acts of Kindness
Making another person’s day brighter is an effective way to really help others. Saying hello, holding open a door or offering to help carry packages are just some simple acts of kindness that can make someone feel better about the day.
It doesn’t take money to help others and make the world a better place. There is so much that each of us can do
